So last week, pre release for the new SET JIN... Our group meets up at Anime Worx Centurion based at the Saxby Shopping Centre.
Wait, actually we were 2 stores down in the old Chinese restaurant used to be... We could still smell the left overs... Bleh
So the time comes, seal boxes no longer sealed, everyone ripping open booster after booster, for some of us this is Christmas come early. All of us sit sorting the cards out in our own unique ways from dividing into colours to sorting via set or as per the mana cost.
For me, I always firstly get it right with sorting into colours then when I've decided what my colours are going to be, I arrange them according to mana cost.
For this pre release, I chose green again, why? I like big creatures that when on the field my opponent doesn't know where to hide... Not that it always works but you get the idea.
So here I am having opened my sealed box and sorted through my cards and what luck I have, I get Xenagos, The Reveler and the red promo dragon, Spawn Of Thraxes to go along with my green promo, Hero's Bane. The next best thing, Stormbreath Dragon... What a good pre release.
So I set up a pretty good RG deck based on Xenagos with the dragons playing a support role. Even though I didn't plan it, my 40 card sealed deck had just the right balance of Lands, creatures and spells.
So our tournament starts, round 1 I face off against our famous doppelganger who is playing a RGU deck... Challenging but it didn't stand a chance against the dragons with whom I destroyed him with on my winning 2-0.
Round 2, feeling good but trying not to be too cocky... I face Christo now with a RU deck. Nice cardsw with some very scary combo's. Still with the damage I'm able to do I manage to scrape a 2-0 win out of it.
By the end of round 2, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances of winning as does a few of my fellow competitors. Then the support prize comes in for the winner, a hand made deck box. Now I really want to win and my chances are good, I'm leading what can go wrong?
I spoke too soon, round 3... I face off against Eugune, awe crap... he's playing BU and I'm already thinking that this one is going to be a challenge. It wasn't much of a challenge, the moment we started I was on the losing side and nothing I did could do anything to narrow the gap. I lost 2-0.
Still reeling after the loss I had hope, I could still win this. The final round, this time against Pieter playing a RU deck, this doesn't look to good for me but I keep my spirits high and look forward but that's all I could do, I did not have an answer at all. It was as though my deck decided cool, we worked now we won't work. I lost again 2-0.
All the results are in, its a 4 way tie for 1st and a 4 way tie for 5th. Interesting... So as we are good people, a play off happened for the top 4 between Pieter, Eugune, Juan and Johan. 1st Round, Johan vs Juan, the latter being the winner. Eugune vs Pieter where the latter won. Again another playoff as Eugune (BU) vs. Juan (WB) and the overwhelming power of WB leads to Juan winning.
Not a bad outing, finishing 7th out of the 12 players.
Still my prize boosters gave me sonme interesting ideas which will be tested out with this FNM.
